MYOB spent $2 million for a 95 percent stake in the operation, which allowed the company to expand into mainland China. Finally, in late November the company announced that its sales and marketing operations in the United States were being sold in a management buyout. In early 2005 Craig Winkler, Christopher Lee, and Brad Shofer held their shares in the company through an investment arm named Solwood Lane Pty. In March the trio, which held a collective 38.6 percent stake in MYOB, sold 40 million shares (10.4% of the company’s issued capital) through Macquarie Equity Capital Ltd. for $1.05 per share. The main reason for the sale was to allow Shofer, who had resigned as a non-executive director of MYOB on May 1, 2004, to cash out a portion of his ownership stake. After the sale, Winkler’s stake in MYOB stood at 20.1 percent, followed by Shofer (8.1%) and Lee (1.2%).

I am a bookkeeper so use a number of different software to facilitate clients accounts.I had a new client come onboard that had an MYOB file that he let laps in May 2023 so only 4 months ago. We needed to get information from this file and have been told they only hold the file for 60 days and you can not access it even as a read only file. They have said that its the agreement my client signed up to as he started on a trial but he held that subscription for 18mths and was paying $53 for this subscription. I can usually access read only files at least.I will no longer recommend any of my clients to MYOB and will be recommending any that I have that are using it to consider moving elsewhere. Our time spent using online accounting software on a monthly basis has actually decreased. It’s been beneficial [because] as a company, we don’t want to spend time running accounting software.
Or there is an Aust company that specialises in MYOB and AccountEdge repairs (whether the version is Aust or US) – do a net search on ‘accountedge conversion service’. In addition to conversions they do repairs as well. How can I talk with a person about my software crashing, and files being updated to a version that doesn’t work on my machine without spending $4 perminute on the phone to call New Zealand? Can someone call me or chat online, share screen etc to resolve my issue. I can find nothing on website that allows this type of intereaction.
Winkler and Shofer initiated a worldwide search to see if accounting software for business owners already existed. Their search uncovered a U.S. company named TeleWare Inc., cofounded by Christopher Lee in November 1982, which had released an application called M.Y.O.B. for the Apple Macintosh. After securing the rights to adapt versions of M.Y.O.B. for the Australian and New Zealand markets in 1991, Winkler formed a joint venture with Shofer named Data-Tech Software. MYOB was founded in the early 1980s by a team of developers at Teleware, who developed accounting software. Teleware was purchased by Best Software (now part of Sage) in 1993.
